New website look, please advice!
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:46:11 PM »
Hi all,

I've been working these past few days on both CompactCMS 1.3.2 as well as on the new sites' lay-out. A few users have received either the 1.3.2. package already, others might have downloaded it from SVN. Let me know what you think. But now the sites' new look. I've made a mock-up - which you see included below. I'd love to hear from any of you what's good, but more important what isn't it. I myself e.g. am wondering whether the green is too much.

Looking forward to your feedback (keep it subtle though ;)), but don't hold back!

Cheers,
Xander.

P.s.: fonts and such aren't completed yet, its more about the e.g. structure

Is the centre part shifted to the left somewhat?    I'm a big fan of full width designs that scale up or down according to screen resolution.

As for colours, if you like green go with it, you'll never please everybody with colour schemes.

Thanks :)..

I know it's always subjective, but I need the design to be somewhat attractive so that new visitors think "let's give that demo a try!". I don't want to scare them aware, without ever having the chance to prove the power of CompactCMS :). The shifting is by the way optical illusion. It's only due to bad screenshotting of my side. I started at a certain point at the left, then saw I had to include the top menu items, which made it a bit off. The "real thing" is nicely centered.

But I think you're right, if I like green it shouldn't hold me back. You don't think it's too much, too crowded?

Cheers!
Xander.

P.s.: I had to adapt the double click behavior due to the fact that cut&paste script I used for the edit-in-place function didn't allow for non-latin based characters. So I decided to rewrite it myself using the current JS framework. If you now double click and then double click again you'll see odd behavior. Now imagine that behavior with a single click :).

hi!

i think you tried too hard with admin page asceticism, Xander =) OK and CANCEL button for titles editor is more useful than mouse double click. it's only my IMHO though.

Hi,

I can't deny that somewhere I have to agree with you. Perhaps I should have a second look at the coding to see if it can be implemented relatively easy. First I need to finish up some Geomarketing (ArcGis) stuff for my thesis. And unluckily it takes up all my system resources while calculating, so I'm a bit inconvenienced. Maybe it's time to update my system :). So it might be delayed.

In the mean time, feel free to use this topic to comment on the actual design of the new website (see screenshot post 1). I'd love to hear your opinion.

Cheers,
Xander.

Okay, I don't know who knows, but believe me: I've tried to many options to get those buttons back in. But no luck. That is: I got it working on FF, but then IE started to double post and so much more. For now I've fixed the double click issue. So one single click makes a field editable and leaving the field automatically saves the changes (if any). Honestly I myself don't find it so disturbing. It's a nice feature to type a new text and finish the modification by just hitting tab or enter. Although the save and cancel button were welcome additions. The problem mainly lies in the fact that I can't generate the buttons using Ajax, since I can't then add the appropriate value (English: Save, Dutch: Opslaan, etc).

Hope you don't mind too much... ;).

Yeah, it doesn't really matter how it works, as long as it does and people know how to use it.   Single click, double click, ok/cancel button, doesn't matter which way really.
