Menu administration improvements
« on: December 11, 2009, 03:32:53 PM »
Hi all,

the recent CMS Critic review highlighted that the menu admin can be confusing - especially where multiple pages are concerned.

Both in versions 1.3.x and 1.4.0 I think the first thing that could be improved is the context help messages.

So to start us off, here are my suggested rewrites:

Menu:

Choose which menu should link to your page. The "Main" menu always links to the homepage. Your site could have between 0 and 5 menus in each template.

(Also change the pop-up header from "Menu Category" to just "Menu")

----

Template:

I like your description already.

----

Top Level (rename table column header, pop-up title and dropdown text to "Menu Pos")

At what position in the menu should this page appear?

(Also change "---" to "Exclude"

----

Sub Level (rename table column header, and pop-up title and dropdown text to "Submenu Pos")

Remove the '0' option, and instead put the text "Not a sub" above the text "Submenu Pos"

The pop-up help can be:

If this page should appear as a submenu then choose its submenu position.

----

Link

I like your text already.

----

Open to other suggestions of course, but that would be a quick change.

(A potential functional change is having the ability to list a page in multiple menus. For example "About Us" or "Contact Us" could appear in multiple places on a web page.

Chris.
